Rotating the Charcoal: As you apply the flame, you can gently rotate the charcoal (if it's round or cylindrical) to ensure all sides get an equal chance to heat up and ignite. This helps in achieving a more even combustion once the charcoal is fully lit.

3. Waiting for the Charcoal to Ignite Properly

Initial Flare - Up: After the first signs of ignition, you might notice a small flare - up or a brief increase in flame. This is normal as the outer layer of the charcoal catches fire first. Let the charcoal burn for a short while in this state to allow the fire to spread to the core of the charcoal.

Judging the Readiness: The charcoal is ready when it has a consistent glow across the surface and the flame has subsided a bit. At this point, it's providing a stable heat source. You can test this by holding your hand a few inches above the charcoal (carefully, to avoid burns). If you feel a steady and even heat, it's time to place the incense on or near the charcoal to start the fragrance - releasing process.
